World-famous Diaspora rock star makes a statement against major mining project in Armenia

“Mining is against our combined interest as a people and nation,” Serj Tankian, an Armenian-American singer–songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning rock band System of a Down has written in response to a group of Armenian environmentalists who had reached out to the musician with a request to look into the goings on with the Teghut Forest.


The country’s leading environment protection groups and other non-governmental organizations have for years been campaigning http://www.azatutyun.am/content/article/1746171.html against plans by the Armenian Copper Program (ACP) company to develop a massive copper and molybdenum deposit in the northern Lori region. The Teghut deposit is estimated to contain 1.6 million tons of copper and about 100,000 tons of molybdenum.

If implemented, the project will lead to the destruction of 357 hectares of rich forest, including 128,000 trees. Critics say that would wreak further havoc on Armenia’s green areas that have already shrunk dramatically since the 1990s.

In the statement made in response to the Armenian environmentalists, Serj Tankian also said: “The destruction of wildlife and environmental havens can no longer be excused for the sake of progress or the attainment of natural resources. Civilization walks a tight rope between survival of self and destruction of all. Based on our historical past and our current geopolitical reality, self reliance for food, water, and energy is extremely important. The destruction of wildlife and the resulting addition to carbons in the air have created the conditions for global warming that severely limit our self reliance.”

ACP admits the heavy environmental cost of its plans but says it will be more than offset by 1,400 new jobs which it has pledged to create in the economically depressed area. The Liechtenstein-registered company has also pledged to build new schools and make other investments in the local infrastructure. The project was formally approved in 2007 by then President Robert Kocharian and his government headed by Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian.


The environmentalists have been working hard and vocally against the project.




One of their loud successes was the stir caused in the media as it emerged, that the wives of Kocharian and Sarkisian, former and current first ladies had signed a petition http://www.azatutyun.am/content/article/1746171.html against the Teghut mining project approved by their husbands, causing a bit of stir in the media.

One of the Teghut campaigners told Ditord.com, that they had asked Serj Tankian to allow use of one of his songs for non-commercial campaigning purposes. A spokesman for the singer said they’ll look into the request and see if they have a song “that can be streamed on the [www.teghut.am] website for non-commercial purposes.”

Tankian, an American-Armenian singer and songwriter, is known for his civil advocacy reflected in his compositions, including for his lobbying of the Armenian genocide affirmation, human rights and animal rights.

We are a group of young activists fighting for nature protection in Armenia.
Today, the 'lungs' of Armenia – the forests, are being devastated, the mountains are destroyed for mining purposes, and soil that used to be so fruitful once is now getting enriched with heavy metals, the water is already dangerous for one’s health. If we keep on moving forward with such strategy in near future Armenia will turn into a big mining field where people from all over the world will have to come wearing protective masks and outfit to study the anomalous occurrences, animals and people.
Dear Serj, we want the stork to make its nest next to our houses just as you do, but most probably soon it will not find a poplar in Armenia to make its nest .

We do not want these forecasts to become true. We are the sons of the earth and we have to fight to protect the peace of land we have. And you are always with us at our demonstrations and different events and actions organized for so many issues. You always encourage us with your songs, profound lyrics and powerful voice. We are all deeply impressed with your activity for nature protection, human rights, peace, etc.
Today, when we are facing with so many obstacles in our work and so many people are trying to threaten us, a small message from you or a song which might serve as an anthem for our green movement, would inspire our team members and volunteers, would give them a new impulse of positive energy so necessary to keep on going and not stepping back, it would encourage new people to join us, and help to protect the mother nature, our motherland that is in danger now. It may even be the song telling what is going on in Armenia now and how people do not realize what their future will turn in thinking just about the moment, about the money....

ECOLUR PRESENTS “URANIUM PHOBIA” DOCUMENTARY

On 12 February 2010 at 15:00 the presentation and discussions of “Uranium Phobia” documentary will take place at the hall named after Alex and Marie Manoogians at American University of Armenia (Bagramyan 40, the Acopian Center for the Environment, 1st floor, Hall 106E).

This documentary is dedicated to the implementation of the uranium project in Armenia and protection of human rights. The documentary is presented by “EcoLur” Informational NGO and the Acopian Center for the Environment of the American University of Armenia. The film was shot by “EcoLur” Informational NGO with the support of Civic Advocacy Support Program implemented by Counterpart International Armenian Branch, and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The film reflects the viewpoints about the uranium project expressed by the Syunik Marz population, NGOs, the administration of the uranium project, i.e. RA Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Areg Galstyan, Scientific Advisor of “Armenian-Russian Mining Company” CJSC and RA NAS Academician Sergey Grigoryan, independent experts Hakob Sanasaryan, the Chairman of the Greens Union of Armenia, and local expert Vladik Martirosyan, the President of “Khoustoup” NGO.

Тема- недавно принятый устав по регулированию и мониторингу спец. школ.

Sегодня в 17.00 будет прямой эфир посвященный Нубарашенской школе #11. На эфир приглашены представитель министерства Образования и Науки, а также представитель общественной организации. Тема- недавно принятый устав по регулированию и мониторингу спец. школ. Я напомню, что до сих пор невозможно было навещать эти школы и проводить мониторинг, выявлять случаи насилия итд. На повестке дня инфа о том, что персонал обвиняемый в случаях насилия над детьми в школе #11 уже отстранен от работы. Если это правда, то почему это делается без извещения широких масс населения. Запутанная и ужасно трудно расследуемая тема, которую надо добивать.
