***ENVIRONMENTAL BICYCLE MARCH

On April 20 at 12 o’clock a march of bicycles will set out from Matenadaran. It is an action for the rescue of the forest of Teghut which is being logged to extract copper and molybdenum. An immense ecosystem will be destroyed. In order to operate the mine, at least 600 ha of forest will be logged (200,000 trees). 55,000 rare trees and 45,000 valuable trees growing in the forest of Teghut, as well as a lot of other plants and animals on the verge of extinction will disappear from this area. What causes more worry is the tailings and their lasting impact. The penetration of heavy metals and other poisonous substances into soil, water and air will inflict great harm on the health of people and the environment. Our health and our children’s health is in danger… The event is environmental. The aim of the bicycle march is to draw the attention of the society and the relevant agencies to this urgent problem. Carrying posters about the rescue of the forest, we will ride along the central streets of Yerevan. The march will be led by professional cyclists. It will also advertise bicycles as an ecological transport. The event is organized by a group of young environmental activists.
